My Arcade Stick Project – Step 1 – Changing the buttons

I bought a HORI HRAP3 (Hori Real Arcade Pro 3) back in April for my PS3 and despite spending £70 on the stick, I found out that where was an update which has Sanwa buttons. When I had learnt of this and had come back from the Battle of Destiny tournament where I saw some kick ass modded Arcade Sticks, I decided that I wanted to make some modifications to my HRAP3. The first step was to change the buttons.

Thanks to Shoryuken Forums, I found out the critical information in order to proceed in changing the buttons around to completely Sanwa-ize my Arcade Stick. I bought the buttons from Gremlin Solutions and when I got round to changing the buttons, it was the easiest thing I had ever done!

Out with the old......

About 30 minutes later and I’ve completed the change, I know have Sanwa buttons in my HRAP3 and what a difference it makes!

...and in with the new!!

Although I haven’t got around to changing the Ball Handle so it matches the buttons, I am trying to figure that out so when I get round to doing that, I will change the Ball Handle. I tried these new buttons on my PS3 and works fine. I also tried it in MAME and works a charm, the buttons feel a lot more responsive and has that Arcade feel I’ve been looking for.

I plan to get the stick to be compatible with the Xbox 360 and both the previous PlayStations by obtaining a PS1 and 360 controller PCB inside the arcade stick. I also wish to change the cover of my HRAP3 and in the process of designing the cover in Photoshop and Fireworks right now. I’ll be back soon with more updates on my Arcade Stick! Thanks for reading!
